Moving With Young Children

Moving can be a stressful time for everyone, but it can be especially nerve-racking for your young children. Moving your child out of their home can upset their sense of security. This being said, here are a few ways that you can you help your child have a smooth transition into their new home in Berkeley.

Tell them about the move

Keeping your move a secret can be disastrous. From talking about your upcoming move to packing for the big day, keeping your kids involved is a sure way to make the whole experience considerably less stressful. Encourage your children to ask as many (uh oh!) questions as they have about your upcoming move.

Tell your kids about their new home, Berkeley, etc.

If possible, it would be good idea to scope out the kid friendly spots around your new home in Berkeley. Parks, playgrounds, and other interesting and fun places that you will be able to visit with your child can be a great stress reliever for both of you after your initial move.

Reassure them.

Let them know that even though they will be moving, your lives together will continue and they will make new friends. You should be honest and tell them that things may be “up in the air” for a while after your move. This way they will know what to expect, just make sure to let them know that everything will settle down after a while.

Keep the kids involved.

A great way to involve your children in the actual moving process would be to have them pack up their stuffed animals, toys, favorite books, etc. This is also a great time to get rid of some of the toys that they aren’t interested in anymore. Encourage your child to set the toys that they don’t play with anymore aside and donate them to a good cause. This can be a rewarding experience and can also help with getting rid of a lot of clutter before moving day.

Let them decorate their new room, kind of.

Your child’s new room will be their sanctuary. Help them get comfortable in their new home by letting them personalize their new space. If you’re planning on painting their room, choose a few different options and let them pick their favorite. Another way that they can personalize their room is with posters, a new light fixture or special night light, or a special banner with their name on it.

Glow-in-the-dark stars for the ceiling or walls instantly make me feel at home ;)

If possible, pack the kids room up last and un-pack them first.

The more time your kids have with their things, the better. This goes for moving out and moving in. Have the movers bring in the boxes and furniture to your kids room first. After the movers from Cheap Movers Berkeley assemble the furniture that belongs in your child’s room your child can begin to unpack the (kid friendly) boxes and settle in. This will also help keep the kids out of the mover’s way while unloading and assembling your things.

Hope these tips help you and your child on your upcoming move!
