How to Pack Fragile Kitchen Items: Dishes and Glassware

Packing dishes and glassware is a tricky endeavor especially because 1) Items are fragile, and 2) Items need to remain as clean as possible as it handles food. If one is not careful, what ends up happening after moving is that all the dishes and glassware have to be washed and dried. It is an unwelcome extra amount of work. Here are some tips to help efficient packing and moving dishes and glassware.

Get strong boxes and pad the insides. If the box is not durable enough, it won’t matter how many times the dishes are wrapped in bubble wrap. Inside a moving truck, this box will be placed among many other boxes and there will be movement. Getting a good container is the first essential step. Line the insides of the box with styrofoam or bubble wrap. Safety of the dishes and glassware comes first; don’t go stingy on the padding.

Use an extra help of covering. If the dishes go into the box padded with styrofoam and crumpled newspaper, they will have to be washed before being used. Put in a big plastic bag inside a padded box, and put dishes inside the plastic bag. When the box seems full, tie up the plastic bag to block any unwelcome material from getting to the dishes.

Between dishes, put in clean towel or bubble wrap sealed in a ziploc bag as padding. If one simply puts bubble wrap between the dishes, they will smell like plastic once they are taken out after the moving.

Carry really valuable items with you. Better safe than be sorry. If there are some items that’s fragile and expensive (ex: crystal bowls and fine china), it may be better to pack them separately and take them with you.

Let your movers know. Mark the box so it is clear: “caution- fragile.” Also make sure to indicate which side is bottom and up. It is good to mark the same thing on all four sides instead of just one. One can also talk to the movers to ensure which boxes need special attention.

Putting a little effort will go a long way and save one plenty of unnecessary work. Think and always try to figure out ways to simplify the moving process; efficient packing also means efficient unpacking.
