Helpful Tips for Easy Moving

It’s not easy, looking around your room trying to figure out how to pack everything. Since you are moving, it is inevitable things need to be packed; you have called your moving company for a free estimate, and even got a coupon! The movers are to come soon. But in what order? Where to begin?
Don’t worry; here are some helpful tips.

1. Categorize.
For example, in a box, put all the small kitchen appliances. Pack clothes by season (summer clothes, spring clothes, etc.) and person (mom, dad, etc.). It will help you track your packing status. Moreover, it will be much easier for everyone when the boxes need to be unpacked. If possible, it’s good to keep the clothes in drawer. Make sure to tape the drawers so they won’t slip out. As for big kitchen appliances, it’s good to clean them and pull the plugs out. It will be helpful to the movers.

2. Number and name your boxes.
After packing your summer clothes, write on the box, “summer clothes” and your name. When you and your boxes arrive at the new place, you will know which box has what. Also, don’t forget to mark “fragile” in case glasses and other shock-sensitive items are packed so your movers will know. Make a list of all the boxes; it will help you to check if everything have arrived safely afterwards.

3. Do not part with really important things.
It is always better to be careful. Make sure to put legal documents such as a passport, birth certificate, bank documents in a folder and carry them with you. There are lots of things being moved; some things need to stick by you so they don’t get lost during the hectic process. Same principle applies to other valuable items such as your jewelry.

4. Be careful.
Check the credentials; Cheap Movers Berkeley is both insured and licensed. On your moving day, do not let your pets run around- either keep them with you or at a fixed place. It will prevent any unnecessary accidents from happening. If you have small children, always keep your watch. It’s good to have a babysitter in your neighborhood to be with your children while things are being moved.

It is important to pack efficiently as well as to unpack efficiently. With a little planning and record-keeping, you can make your moving experience much lighter. Let’s keep things simple, and keep the headaches away.

Green Moving Tips from Cheap Movers Berkeley

While thinking about your upcoming move out of Berkeley, have you thought about the footprint that your move will leave on the environment?

For your next move, why not use some of these eco-friendly moving tips?

Green Moving Tips!

1. Less is more… Try not to accumulate too much stuff in the first place.

You’ll stop the cycle of ‘wasting’ if you don’t buy those questionable items that may give you buyer’s remorse later.

2. Get rid of what you don’t want or need anymore, before the move. ..

Doing this will cut down on the amount of boxes that you’ll need, will save you packing and unpacking time, and if you do a yard sale you’ll be able to make back some of the money you’ve spent :]

3. Use recyclables or things made out of recycled material…

Though most moving companies would rather you pack using new boxes due to stability issues, you can buy used cardboard boxes. Another option is using cardboard boxes made from recycled material.

4. Rent supplies…

Rent moving supplies such as boxes or packing crates. Another option instead of using cardboard boxes is hiring a comp using crates for your move as an alternative. The movers from Cheap Movers Berkeley will be more than willing to move these objects.

5. Cut back on bubble wrap…

You can get just about same packing done by using recycled newspaper, old sheets, and towels on your non-fragile items. Another eco-friendly way to move is with biodegradable packing peanuts, packing paper made from post-consumer waste, or popcorn! YES, POPCORN. This tasty snack can also be used to help cushion your stuff in boxes. It really works, just make sure that you use PLAIN popcorn unless you want salt and butter on your things. Using these things to pack may make boxes a little heavier than bubble wrap, but any little bit helps when it comes to protecting our environment.

6. Use environmentally friendly cleaning supplies…

Before you’re ready to lock up your house for the last time, use cleaning products that are safe for our environment such as those from Seventh Generation (available in major stores such as Target, Ralph’s, and CVS Pharmacy).

Hope these tips will help you with your next GREEN move!

Best,

Gabriella

Moving With Young Children

Moving can be a stressful time for everyone, but it can be especially nerve-racking for your young children. Moving your child out of their home can upset their sense of security. This being said, here are a few ways that you can you help your child have a smooth transition into their new home in Berkeley.

Tell them about the move

Keeping your move a secret can be disastrous. From talking about your upcoming move to packing for the big day, keeping your kids involved is a sure way to make the whole experience considerably less stressful. Encourage your children to ask as many (uh oh!) questions as they have about your upcoming move.

Tell your kids about their new home, Berkeley, etc.

If possible, it would be good idea to scope out the kid friendly spots around your new home in Berkeley. Parks, playgrounds, and other interesting and fun places that you will be able to visit with your child can be a great stress reliever for both of you after your initial move.

Reassure them.

Let them know that even though they will be moving, your lives together will continue and they will make new friends. You should be honest and tell them that things may be “up in the air” for a while after your move. This way they will know what to expect, just make sure to let them know that everything will settle down after a while.

Keep the kids involved.

A great way to involve your children in the actual moving process would be to have them pack up their stuffed animals, toys, favorite books, etc. This is also a great time to get rid of some of the toys that they aren’t interested in anymore. Encourage your child to set the toys that they don’t play with anymore aside and donate them to a good cause. This can be a rewarding experience and can also help with getting rid of a lot of clutter before moving day.

Let them decorate their new room, kind of.

Your child’s new room will be their sanctuary. Help them get comfortable in their new home by letting them personalize their new space. If you’re planning on painting their room, choose a few different options and let them pick their favorite. Another way that they can personalize their room is with posters, a new light fixture or special night light, or a special banner with their name on it.

Glow-in-the-dark stars for the ceiling or walls instantly make me feel at home ;)

If possible, pack the kids room up last and un-pack them first.

The more time your kids have with their things, the better. This goes for moving out and moving in. Have the movers bring in the boxes and furniture to your kids room first. After the movers from Cheap Movers Berkeley assemble the furniture that belongs in your child’s room your child can begin to unpack the (kid friendly) boxes and settle in. This will also help keep the kids out of the mover’s way while unloading and assembling your things.

Hope these tips help you and your child on your upcoming move!

Moving With Your Pet

It may take time for you to get comfortable in your new home, so what about your pets?

Follow the routine.

Following your pet’s normal feeding schedule during your move will help alleviate some of the stress away from your beloved animal. If you take your dog out for a walk at the same time every day, it would be a good idea to continue with that routine as well. Following the routine that your pooch was on before the move will help keep their sense of security present throughout this stressful time.

Get new tags.

Make sure that you get all of your pets new tags with your new address and phone number on them. While moving into your new home, doors and gates may be left open, creating an escape route for an already curious pet. To be safe, put the new tags on right before actually moving into your new home.

Scope out the neighborhood.

Find out where your local parks, dog parks, and pet friendly hangouts are in your new area.

Follow this link for some dog friendly places in your area. Take your pooch out for a walk, but take it a block at a time. There are so many new things to see, hear, and smell, that you don’t want to make this an overwhelming experience.

Spend time together.

No matter what, your dog is attached to you, not just your home. You are your pet’s best friend, and spending time together while still getting used to your new place can work wonders. You’ll be able to see exactly what Fido is getting into and where (and hide things accordingly!), while being able to watch how he’s adjusting to his new home. Start leaving your new house in small increments to see how your pooch is adjusting to being in their new space ALONE!

Surround them with their favorite things.

Help keep your puppy happy by surrounding them with their favorite things! You don’t have to buy new toys, though I’m sure you’re best friend would love them! Toys from your old home can be comforting and fun. I would also recommend leaving an article of your clothing with them (on their bed is best) so that they can relax with your soothing, familiar scent.

Hope these tips help your pup adjust to your new home!

Best wishes,

Gabriella

5 Things to Remember When You Move

1. Write down your new address

It may seem silly, but it usually takes time to memorize your new address, so write it down, and keep a copy of it with you in your wallet. Doing this will help with all of the change-of-address' that you may have to do later on.

Don't forget to have your mail forwarded through the post office and change your mailing address on those magazine subscriptions that you've been stocking up on.

Here is a link to the USPS’s online change of address page:

https://moversguide.usps.com/icoa/flow.do?_flowExecutionKey=_cD42407D5-7E3C-BD1F-E152-A2FFF179DFFE_k807FFB5E-9F69-D146-FE0D-DA125047899E

2. Keep all of your important records handy

You never know when you may need your important records, so make sure that you keep the following together and in a specific box just in case.

  • Medical Records
  • Dental Records
  • School Records
  • Veterinary Records
  • Car Records
  • Home Records
  • Insurance Records

Having these important documents together and in a safe place will give you peace of mind and ensure that you are better prepared for anything your move may throw at you.

3. Collect the Keys

You may have given your neighbors, friends, or family members a set of your old house keys in case of an emergency (like an embarrassing late night lockout!). Make sure that you collect all of those spare keys and if you’d like to, make copies for your new home and ask everyone to replace them.

4. This and That

With so much to keep track of during your new move, it’s easy to forget about all of the little things you may have to do before moving day.

If applicable, make sure of the following

  • All DVDs you have rented have been returned
  • All books that have been borrowed from the library are returned
  • All of the dry cleaning has been picked up

5. MAKE SURE THAT THE MOVING COMPANY YOU ARE USING HAS A RELIABLE NUMBER TO REACH YOU AT!

Yes, for some it may seem scary to give out their cell phone number, but in this case it is an absolute necessity that you give the local moving company that you have chosen a number that they can actually reach you at. I cannot tell you how many people give their moving company their old home number that of course has been disconnected. It is important for the moving company that you choose to be able to reach you both before the move and during the move.

Following these five tips will surely take some of the stress out of moving!

Wishing you the smoothest of moves,

Gabriella

Moving Tip!

Pack an Essentials Box!

Hopefully you’ve already found your local moving company in Berkley, so now to the packing!

Moving can be a nightmare but if you pack a box of the essentials that you’ll need for the next 24 hours or so after your move you’ll find the experience to be much less stressful!

You don’t want to worry about ransacking all of the boxes to find that toothbrush or Fido’s food bowl!

Things that should be in your Essentials Box:

  • Toilet Paper (don’t get caught without it!!)
  • Dish soap, Dishtowel, and dishcloth
  • All-purpose cleaner (a new bottle will be money well spent!)
  • Instant coffee (it can be a looooong few days)
  • Toaster or small toaster oven
  • Jar of pasta sauce and pasta (or some easy food item for one dinner and lunch)
  • Unopened small jar of jam/peanut butter
  • Snacks
  • Mug, plate, fork, knife, spoon for each member of the family
  • All-purpose cutting knife
  • Beverages
  • Pet food and dishes
  • Radio
  • Scissors, craft knife, or box cutter (to open the rest of your boxes)
  • Small emergency kit
  • Portable tool kit
  • Flashlights, candles, and matches (you just never know)
  • Shower curtain (unless you’ve got doors on your shower/tub)
  • Shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothbrush, floss, and toothpaste
  • A change of clothing and towel for each member of the family.
  • Sheets for each bed
  • Garbage bags
  • Important records (medical records, passports, leases, financial information, etc.)

It might also be a good idea to check out the local grocery store for food you can quickly prepare for yourself and your family.

To maximize the effectiveness of your essentials box, put it in the the car, the cab you’ll take, or ask the movers to put it in the truck once they’re done packing away everything else(that way it will be the first thing off the truck at your new home).

Wishing you a smooth move,

Gabriella
