Ways to Minimize Garbage or Waste In Moving

Yearly people move from one place to another. Moving has been common since time immemorial, we can trace it back from our ancestors generations ago, or even to the nomadic era. But we cannot deny that when we move we produce wastes from moving and it has been increasing fast, but we are not aware of it. So how do we minimize the waste we produce from moving? Here are some ways to minimize waste while moving:

Avoid buying new boxes- Prior to moving date, collect and save boxes to be used in moving. Try recycling boxes- Ask friends or go to any local stores who have unused boxes and use it. If you happen to know anyone from your neighbourhood who had recently moved in, ask if they have unused boxes you can use. Using corrugated boxes in moving is preferable since it is made from highest recycled content and more eco friendly. Make use of your bags, suitcases or any things which can be useful in packing your linens and clothes in moving. Once you have reached your destination and moved in, keep the boxes that are still reusable and needed. Some moving companies have reusable storage crates which you can rent, so better coordinate with the moving company. Some boxes are durable which can withstand time for years and be recycled.

Fragile items like glass wares, photo frames must be wrapped with old newspapers. When moving, instead of using styro foams for cushioning, try resorting to a more eco-friendly cushioning materials like peanut shells, corn husks or shredded wood chips. All the materials that were used in moving must be recycled and reused. Preceding to moving, dispose non-recyclable materials properly. Disposing properly of hazardous and non recyclable materials like plastics, household cleaning materials, cleaners, paints, car oil and automotive supplies must be done before moving. Prior to moving, call your waste company for a pick up or drop off locations for disposed garbage. When cleaning up the house before moving, use materials which can still be reused, so you can carry it with you.

Garage sale is a must! This is not only to lighten your load but also to earn an ample amount of money which can be used in moving. Look at your closet for clothes which doesn't fit anymore or which you think is not needed. Carefully select the things you need to bring and things you need to sell like toys, appliances, books or any items you don't want to bring when you move. If garage sale is not your idea of lightening your load when moving, then why not donate it to a charity. When arriving at your new destination after moving, try to find out if your new community have a recycling program or if not then try recycling the boxes yourself. Use and recycle the boxes to keep things or any personal belongings after moving.
